Over the past few years, women’s sports have been slowly moving the needle and drawing attention to the inequalities the teams and players face. Issues like low funding and pay, gender stereotypes, discrimination, and sexism are being brought to the forefront of conversations and pulling in a large number of supporters from all over the world.
In 2020, Los Angeles announced its first women's professional soccer team since 2010 - Angel City FC. This majority female-owned team, founded by Natalie Portman, Julie Uhrman, and Kara Nortman, has proved they are a force to be reckoned with by bringing awareness to women’s sports beyond the soccer field. In this session, you’ll hear from Julie and Kara, in a discussion led by Anson Sowby, CEO of Battery, on how the soccer club came to be now considered the most highly valued women’s sports team in the world. They’ll dive deeper into the challenges and successes encountered when building a brand from the ground up and what this means for the future of women’s sports.
